What’s in my purse?

I saw this segment on other blogs and thought it was pretty cute. I’m such a nosy little snoop, I like to know these things. Do you? Anyway, I thought I’d join in the fun every now and again; when my purse and its contents change – which happens every couple of months to make it significant enough to warrant a post.

Product Review: Ragamuffin Design of Etsy

I met Jess Lyons of Ragamuffin Design via Twitter. I think it was Twitter. I always meet the coolest people on Twitter. Anyhow, when I checked out her Etsy store I fell positively in love with her hand knitted elf hats. Then she started listing beautiful hand crocheted tams and one in particular just screamed, “BUY ME!” (we all know how that goes). I purchased the lavender and cream tam on May 4th and had it in my possession less than a week later. It was neatly packaged, along with a personalized note from Jess.

The hat is made with a level of professionalism and personal care that one rarely sees with mass-produced brands. Wrapped in purple tissue paper, the tam was even more stunning in person.

I found an excuse to wear my new tam that very day and wore it to the theater when I saw my boyfriend perform for the first time.

In addition to elf hats and tams, Jess also makes jewelry, scarves and neck warmers, mitts and hand warmers, eco-friendly bags and household items. Whew! And I consider it a productive day when I put on pants. Now, being the nosy kind of person I am, I just had to pick Jess’s brain on Ragamuffin as I am insanely jealous of her awesome knitting/crocheting talent.

Q1: When//where did you learn to crochet and knit?

A: I learned to crochet simple chains from my grandmother when I was 8, but it wasn’t until college that I really started making anything – I
mostly learned to crochet from online directions (!) and I learned to knit from friends.

Q2: What is your “regular/offline” field of work/study?

A: Haha it’s totally unrelated! I am working on my PhD in Science and Technology Studies, focusing on international environmental policy in
relation to whaling.

Q3: What has been the best part of operating Ragamuffin Design?

A: Being my own boss! I can work whenever and wherever I am, not to mention I actually like my job.

Q4: How did Ragamuffin Designs come about?

A: Dear Lord! Basically, my family got tired of getting hats/scarfs/mittens/etc for Christmas/Birthdays/Valentines Day/etc. I
ended up with two garbage bags full of things I had made in my basement. I really needed to get rid of them and free up some space &
Etsy seemed like the best place to start.

Q5: What is currently influencing your personal style and creative flow?

A: Now that days are getting longer, hotter and sunnier I find myself, of course, being influenced more and more by summery things – sea shells,
bright tropical flowers, and nautical themes. I’ve also been paying a lot more attention to texture and have been mixing more fabrics and
patterns, and mixing pieces in my own wardrobe from the Salvation Army with more high end designers to create a casual bohemian look.

So, what are you waiting for? Hop on over to Etsy and check out Ragamuffin Design today!

Shopaholic Saturday: Science Edition

Shopaholic Saturday is once again brought to you by my friend Liz, aka SOON-TO-BE-DOCTOR Liz, who was gracious enough to take the time away from curing cancer to contribute to Glass of Win. Liz was the kind of Smart Girl in high school who didn’t lord it over others, and was also a good sport about being Sailor Mars to my Super Sailor Moon. IN PUBLIC. She is also the kind of girl who will pass notes written entirely in Elvish. Thank you for everything, Liz! -R

I’ve wanted to be a scientist since elementary school and ever since then I’ve been on the nerdy side. My high school friends put up with me telling them that “oranges are composed of specialized plant hairs” or called yogurt pops “frozen bacteria cultures on a stick.” …I’m surprised that they were still my friends after that. Anyway, I never grew out of being fan-girly about science, especially biochemistry and molecular biology. While not all science is biology, here are some delightful sciencey finds:

They can span the range of being cute-and-cuddly to downright badass. I still have a soft spot for unicorns, but dragons are where tend to I spend my money:

Owl Say Designs Jet-Setter Giveaway

While scouring Etsy for some particular Shopaholic Saturday theme months back, I stumbled on Owl Say Designs. Proprietor Kelley Terrill specializes in a multitude of products, but it was the passport covers that caught my eye. I knew I wanted one for my own, but I kept holding off on buying because I couldn’t pick just one design! Finally, last week I realized that there’s only one month left until Steffie Love and I leave for our two week Ireland adventure and we decided to finally tackle our indecisiveness and buy our passport covers.

Left to right: Steffie Love’s checkbook cover & morning glory passport cover and my birdie passport cover.

Here is what Kelley has to say in her Etsy bio:

I am a stay-at-home mom which is by far the hardest job I’ve ever had! I am a college graduate and have worked in various (and unfulfilling) corporate jobs. From Customer Service Rep, to Production Scheduler to Project Manager – no matter how high up the corporate ladder I climbed, the result was always the same – bust my hump so someone else could get the big payoff and recognition. It didn’t take me long to decide I could live without all that stress.

I discovered Etsy while watching one of Samantha Brown’s Travel Programs. She was touring the Eastern Market in Washington DC and the vendors were so amazing I actually paused the show so I get close to the TV to see where they sold online. After doing a little Etsy research, I knew I had found a new outlet for my calling.

Pink cupcakes luggage tags

I have always loved to make things with my hands. I’m blessed to have had wonderful, gifted grandmothers who loved to sew, my dad who’s always done some sort of crafting, and my husband who somehow has visions of finished products long before they are finished.

I started my first shop, Tattered Tapestry, and made tons of baby items. I soon discovered my idea wasn’t exactly unique. About this time, my husband began to travel to Canada and I found myself unable to find a decent inexpensive passport cover for his passport. Living on only one salary doesn’t lend itself to paying $20-$30 (or more!) for a passport cover. I knew there had to be hundreds of families in positions like mine. So I looked for a way to create and develop inexpensive, sincerely cute, and drastically affordable passport covers. A cover that would stand up to a guy shoving it in his back pocket, cramming it in his briefcase, spilling soda on it, and baby spit-up (hey, it happens). Thus began Owl Say Designs. Everything else in the shop flowed from there.

I love being able to offer products that are beautiful, creative, have multiple uses and most of all, are affordable. I sincerely believe everyone should be able to own high quality, beautiful products without overpaying for them. So with that I say, Happy Shopping!

Me: What’s the most rewarding aspect of having your Etsy business?

Kelley: FREEDOM! I’ve never worked well on a fixed schedule, so having my own Etsy business lets me set my own hours. Oddly, I have found I work many more hours, but I guess that’s because, for once, I love what I’m doing!

Me: Where is your dream vacation?

Kelley: It’s hard to pick just one place, but I MUST go to Ireland and Scotland. Of course, any or all of the UK would be amazing too. But I have a pretty strong Scotch-Irish heritage, so I sort of feel drawn there. And yes, I’m so borderline jealous that you are going to Ireland on your trip!

What better way to celebrate independent sellers and a vacation than to have a travel-themed GIVEAWAY!

THE GIVEAWAY: One winner will be chosen at random and they can pick the passport cover AND luggage tags of their choice! You can make them match or have them clash, it’s all up to you!
