I need a new theme for July’s Music Monday and decided to go with the obvious, Summer. The song that instantly popped into my head: Boys of Summer by Don Henley.
I love this song, and other than a deep, nostalgic pull I cannot explain why. Perhaps the songs themes, aging, reflection and the passing of youth just really pull at me. It’s themes I’ve used in my own writings.
I think the music video is kind of underwhelming…like, I dunno, it doesn’t do the song justice. Perhaps nothing can truly compare to the MV I have going on in my head, though?
I was very upset when The Atari’s became the band known for the song; it bugged me that my friends didn’t know the original. I’ve let it go since, though, and came to eventually appreciate the cover, due in part to lead singer Kris Roe vocals.
How much do I love thee, Pat Benatar? Let me count the ways…
Seriously, I’d want her on my side in a post-apocalyptic backyard zombie brawl. MY SIDE? What am I talking about? She would be Red Strike Double Platinum Leader because as Strong Fierce Women Singers go, Pat is #1 (tied with Annie Lennox).
I have such a serious Lady-Crush on Benatar, but who wouldn’t with that pixie bedhead hair and belting voice? Did you know she was the FIRST female featured on MTV? Most know and love her for Love is a Battlefield and while I adore that song, in my heart, nothing can top my personal favorite, Invincible.
Invincible
Confession: I’ve never seen The Legend of Billie Jean. I am not opposed to seeing it, it’s just never happened. I’ve always known the song, though, with its amazingly uplifting lyrics that dare the listener to challenge themselves and go for the glory. If you’re ever down or feeling like you can’t accomplish something, just turn on some Benatar and in no time you’ll be feeling invincible!
Today is milk glass mao’s 27th birthday. I could have gone through her blog and figured out which songs she enjoys most, something by Sun Kil Moon or Elliot Smith…maybe dug up an old childhood favorite…but honestly, it just isn’t a gift from me if I’m not celebrating with the most obnoxiously New Wave, bubblegum-pop song to wish KD a truly happy birthday!
The 1980s is full one-hit wonder and cheese-o-rama GOLD – gold, I tell you – and this awesome ditty by Scottish band Altered Images featured in the 1984 flick Sixteen Candles is a true gem.
