Music Monday: Running Up that Hill (A Deal with God)

While staying over my friend Monkey’s house in early September to escape the smoke & heat from the latest round of Los Angeles fires, I was formally introduced to Kate Bush. I had only previously heard Wuthering Heights – and while impressed with Kate’s vocals – I was kind of scared off from further pursuing her songs. Monkey knew just the cure, one part Cloudbusting and a strong dose of Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God). Both songs are found on the Hounds of Love album, released in 1985.

The song focuses on the idea that a man and woman cannot truly understand one another until they are able to, essentially, be in each others places and the only way this could be accomplished is to make a deal with God.

The song is glorious and just a sample of the awesome power that is Kate Bush’s singing and songwriting.

Notable covers for Running Up That Hill include
Placebo
Kerli
chromatics

Kate! I love Kate Bush, my mom raised me on her music. Running Up That Hill is one of my favorite songs of all time, but I also love The Red Shoes, Lily, Hello Earth, Experiment 4, Jig of Life, Babooshka, Be Kind to My Mistakes, and Clousbusting.

Hurrah, KT! This is a great song. Her music is ridiculously special and important to me. I love her so much even though her track record for putting out albums is very slow. I’ve always told myself that if she ever plays live again I’m going to fly to wherever she is to see her perform LOL. ‘Kite’ is one of my favorite songs. I still want to get a tattoo based on that song and the photo shoot she did for it.
