This Week in Food

If I can hang on to this category for dear life I just might be able to make it a regular post. Let’s all cross our fingers and hope for the best.

Food Trends
Is it just me, or do people seem to be less interested in eating duck and more keen on deep frying other foods with duck fat? Food writer Melissa Clark shares Duck Fat-Fried Chicken and the duck fat fries from Go Burger is all the rage right now.

Food, Food, Glorious Food!
There are so many food festivals going on right now. There is of course the big show, L.A. Street Food Festival, on July 16th. I tried to inquire about a press pass but they must have just sat and laughed at my email because I didn’t get a response. $60 is actually not a terrible price since that includes all food samples, drinks (including alcohol), chef demos, photo booth, giveaways and parking (which isn’t needed for me).
I might buy a ticket anyway as a special birthday present to myself, but there is the Eat Real Fest going on the same weekend. I can’t describe it more succinctly than the website: “The Eat Real Festival celebrates all things tasty, fresh, and handmade with a focus on street food, local wines, handcrafted beers, and traditional food craft – all featuring sustainable, local ingredients. And no dish or drink costs more than $5.” There are 22 vendors, just a fraction of the amount at the Street Food Festival, and let’s say I spent $4.00 on each vendor – that would still be $28 more than I would pay for the Street Food Festival. Hm. Decisions.
Luckily, it’s a no-brainer that I’ll be making an appearance at the Friday Food Fair & Artisanal Marketplace in Pasadena. Why did I not know of it before? Don’t ask. My head must be under a rock.

Kitchen Talk
On a personal level, I’m trying to keep my at-home meals to five-six small portioned snacks/meals throughout my day. I only keep fruit to snack on when I want something sweet and if I do wind up making a big meal I pack away most of it for my family or for later, if it’s something that keeps well. Definitely easier when I’m alone and only when I’m at home. If I’m out? Forget it; it’s going to be fried, doused in a vat of gravy and larger than my head.

Let’s Eat! Recipes of the Week:
Sydney creates an interesting spin on pho with her chicken and mushroom pho recipe.
Bartender Chris Parke shares the secret of the Strawberry Balsamic Cocktail with KCET.
No summer is complete without my favorite, fruit salad with honey, mint and lime syrup.

Feedback: Let me know if this is a regular feature you’d like to see. Also, please email me recipe links you would like to share. Vegan, baking, cooking, alcohol, gluten-free, meat lovers, all are welcome!
